For over 5,000 years, neem has been traditionally used in Ayurveda, living up to its Sanskrit name “arishta,” meaning “reliever of sickness.”
Neem oil, often referred to as a “village pharmacy,” has been valued as a multifunctional natural remedy.
Traditionally, neem leaves and oil have been used to care for skin concerns and to naturally discourage insects.
According to scientific research, neem oil contains:
• Azadirachtin – a key compound that may help naturally repel insects.
• Gedunin and Nimbidol – shown in a 2018 study (Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy) to help reduce inflammatory responses and microbial activity.
• Vitamin E and Copper – may support the neutralization of free radicals and help maintain skin elasticity.
• Oleic and Linoleic acids – known to support the skin’s protective lipid barrier and reduce moisture loss.
For Face and Body:
• Blemish-prone skin: may help regulate sebum production, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and support clearer-looking skin.
• Dry/sensitive skin: helps calm irritation, flaking, and tightness, including that associated with conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
• May assist in promoting skin renewal in case of burns, minor cuts, scars, or pressure sores.
• Supports the skin’s natural defenses against a variety of fungal and bacterial influences.
• Traditionally used to help lower fever and may offer relief during periods of general immune stress.
• May help ease muscle and joint tension and support mobility when used topically.
• Offers a soothing effect, helping reduce itching, redness, and sensitivity from insect bites or skin reactions.
• Acts as a natural insect deterrent, supporting protection from lice, mites, and other pests.
• In oral care, it may support a healthy oral microbiome and gum condition.
For Hair and Scalp:
• May help reduce scalp flakiness and itching by supporting a balanced scalp environment.
• Helps reinforce hair at the root level, potentially supporting reduced hair breakage and loss.
• Face: Mix 1–2 drops with a base oil (such as jojoba or sweet almond) before applying to cleansed skin. Not recommended for use undiluted.
• Hair: Add 3–4 drops to your shampoo or hair mask. For scalp care, massage a few drops into the scalp, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse.
• Body: Apply 4–5 drops to areas of tension and massage gently.
• For insect protection, apply to exposed skin. May be blended with essential oils like lavender for enhanced effect.
• To enhance skin recovery, combine with rosehip or calendula oil.
• Neem oil may also be diluted in water and sprayed as a natural garden treatment.
• It may support pet skin care and help deter fleas and ticks.
Due to its specific aroma, it can be blended with essential oils such as tea tree or orange.
