Jojoba oil, extracted from the seeds of the slow-growing shrub Simmondsia Chinensis, has a long history of traditional use among indigenous peoples of North and South America, where it was used to support skin protection in harsh desert climates and as part of care routines for wounds and skin damage.
In 1971, the ban on whale oil imports led to the discovery that jojoba oil offers superior qualities compared to sperm whale oil for use in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and other industries.
Technically a liquid wax, jojoba oil is highly resistant to oxidation and retains its beneficial properties for an extended period. Its composition closely resembles human sebum, which may contribute to easy absorption without leaving a greasy residue. It is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic.
According to scientific research, jojoba oil contains up to 70% fatty acids, including omega-9 and omega-3, as well as amino acids with a structure similar to collagen. It is naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E, and F, tannins, sterols, and ceramides.
These components may help support the skin's barrier function and contribute to its smoothness and elasticity.
The wax esters in jojoba oil are believed to support the skin's natural defense by limiting the growth of certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and fungi of the genus Candida.
